How the real JFT-Basic works
The JFT-Basic is a computer-based test of Japanese needed in everyday life in Japan. The official test has approximately 50 questions and a total test time of 60 minutes. It contains four sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension. There is no separate speaking interview or written essay.
| Section | Approximate official questions | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Script and Vocabulary | Around 12 | Word meaning and usage, kanji reading, and kanji meaning in everyday contexts. |
| Conversation and Expression | Around 12 | Grammar and expressions that fit the situation and relationship between speakers. |
| Listening Comprehension | Around 12 | Conversations, exchanges in shops or public places, announcements and instructions. |
| Reading Comprehension | Around 12 | Short messages, notices and finding specific information in everyday materials. |
What these mock tests reproduce
50 questions in 60 minutes
Each full set keeps all four sections under one timer and locks an earlier section after you move forward.
Section-by-section sets
Use individual vocabulary, reading and listening sets when you need repetition before attempting another full simulation.
Answers and explanations
Review mistakes after practice and record whether the problem was vocabulary, grammar, reading speed or missed audio detail.
Independent questions
The questions were created for NihongoDoya. They are not copied from, endorsed by or presented as official examination questions.
Navigation rules you should practise
On the official test, you can review and change answers while you remain in the same section. Once you advance to the next section, you cannot return to the previous one. Listening is stricter: you cannot move backward or forward to review listening questions. Use the NihongoDoya Android app's full mock mode to practise making a final decision before leaving a section instead of relying on unlimited review.
Understand your practice score
NihongoDoya reports a raw practice result based on the number of questions answered correctly. The official JFT-Basic does not simply add correct answers; it reports a statistically adjusted scaled score from 10 to 250. A score of 200 or higher is the A2 passing standard used for the Specified Skilled Worker language requirement. Therefore, a raw score on this site is a diagnostic result—not a prediction or conversion to an official score.
Result update from August 2026: the testing method, question structure and difficulty remain unchanged, but official result notices additionally assess scores of 145–174 as A1, 175–199 as A2.1, and 200–250 as A2.2 (A2). The 200-point A2.2 threshold remains the important target when A2 is required.
A four-step improvement cycle
- Take one full set without notes in the Android app. Use the 60-minute timer and do not pause to look up words.
- Classify every mistake. Mark it as unknown vocabulary, grammar confusion, missed listening detail, reading-speed problem or careless selection.
- Practise the weakest section. Use the website's free listening practice, reading practice or vocabulary practice for short focused drills.
- Retest with a fresh set. Compare the type of mistakes, not only the percentage. Improvement means fewer repeated error patterns and better time control.
Frequently asked questions
Are these official JFT-Basic questions?
No. Every question is independent practice material created for NihongoDoya. Use the Japan Foundation's sample questions to see official examples and interface specifications.
Can I practice without installing the app?
General bite-sized Japanese practice (vocabulary, grammar, kanji, counters, and reading worksheets) remains completely free and accessible on the website under Practice. Full Prometric-style timed CBT full simulations with audio playback require the NihongoDoya Android app.
Are my purchases synchronized with the app?
Yes. When you purchase package bundles on the NihongoDoya website Store, log into the Android app using the same Firebase account (Google or email), and your unlocked packages will be automatically available.
