About This Number Cheat Sheet

Numbers are among the very first things you need in Japanese — for prices, phone numbers, times, dates and ages. The base system is logical, but a handful of irregular readings trip up almost every beginner: 300 is さんびゃく (not さんひゃく), the 1st of the month is ついたち, and being 20 years old is はたち.

This cheat sheet gathers the whole system onto one page: the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands, the days of the month, telling the time, and counting age — with the irregular readings flagged with a star so you know exactly which ones to memorise.

Because it is laid out in compact side-by-side tables, it works both as a learning tool and a quick reference you can glance at whenever you are reading a price tag, a timetable or a calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about using or printing this resource? Check out our quick answers below.

Is this number cheat sheet free?

Yes, it is completely free with no signup required. Download it instantly from any button on this page.

Which numbers does it cover?

Ones, tens, hundreds and thousands up to 10,000, plus days of the month, telling the time and counting age.

Why is 300 read さんびゃく and not さんひゃく?

It is a sound change for easier pronunciation. Several hundreds are irregular — 300, 600 and 800 — and the sheet marks each with a star.

Does it explain dates?

Yes. The days of the month, including the many N5 irregulars like ついたち (1st) and はつか (20th), are on the sheet.

Is はたち really the word for 20 years old?

Yes. Age uses the 歳 counter, but 20 has the special reading はたち, which the sheet highlights.

Can I print it on one page?

Yes, it is a compact two-column layout that fits a single A4 or Letter page and prints with sharp vector text.

Do I need kanji knowledge?

No. Every entry shows the kana reading, so you can use it before you learn the kanji.

Can I share it with classmates?

Please do — share this page link or print copies. Reselling or rehosting the PDF is not allowed.
