What you will learn

You will be able to talk about conditions and concessions — if it rains, when I have money, even if it's cheap — completing the entire N5 grammar syllabus.

  • たら = た-form + ら: あめが ふったら "if/when it rains"
  • たら also covers "when A completes, B": うちへ かえったら, でんわします
  • ても = て-form + も: やすくても かいません "even if it's cheap"
  • もし strengthens たら; いくら〜ても strengthens the concession

Grammar (文法)

1. 〜たら、〜 (if / when — conditional)

States that if/when A happens, then B. Very versatile conditional. Formed from the た-form + ら.

Formation: た-form + ら

  • Verb: 行いった → 行いったら ; 食たべた → 食たべたら
  • い-adj: 安やすかった → 安やすかったら
  • な-adj: 暇ひまだった → 暇ひまだったら
  • Noun: 雨あめだった → 雨あめだったら

A. Hypothetical condition

  • 時間じかんが あったら、旅行りょこうに 行いきます。 — If I had time, I'd go traveling.
  • 安やすかったら、買かいます。 — If it's cheap, I'll buy it.
  • 明日あした 雪ゆきだったら、出でかけません。 — If it snows tomorrow, I won't go out.

B. After a definite event ("when / once")

  • 空港くうこうに 着ついたら、メールして ください。 — When you arrive at the airport, please email me.
  • 仕事しごとが 終おわったら、飲のみに 行いきましょう。 — When work finishes, let's go for a drink.

Unlike 〜と, 〜たら can be followed by requests, will, invitations.

2. 〜ても、〜 (even if / even though — concession)

States that even if A, the result B is unchanged/contrary to expectation.

Formation

  • Verb て-form + も : 雨あめが 降ふっても
  • い-adj 〜くて + も : 高たかくても
  • な-adj / Noun 〜で + も : 暇ひまでも / 日曜日にちようびでも
  • 雨あめが 降ふっても、試合しあいは あります。 — Even if it rains, the match will be held.
  • 高たかくても、必要ひつようなら 買かいます。 — Even if it's expensive, I'll buy it if it's needed.
  • 祝日しゅくじつでも、店みせは 開あいて います。 — Even on holidays, the shop is open.

3. もし / いくら 〜ても (emphasis)

  • もし 困こまったことが あったら、言いって ください。 — If you have any trouble, please tell me. (もし = if, emphasizes hypothesis)
  • いくら 呼よんでも、返事へんじが ありません。 — No matter how much I call, there's no answer.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

あめが ふりますたら、いきません。

あめが ふったら、いきません。

たら builds on the plain た-form: ふった + ら. The ます-form never appears before たら — conjugate down to plain first, then attach ら.

Using たら when the meaning is "even if": やすかったら、かいません。(intending "even if it's cheap, I won't buy")

やすくても、かいません。

たら sets a condition where B follows A; ても says B happens regardless of A. "If it's cheap I won't buy" (たら) is strange logic — the concession needs ても.

もし you attach to the end: あめが ふったらもし…

もし あめが ふったら、…

もし is a sentence-opening signal that a condition is coming — it warns the listener early. It always stands at (or near) the front, never after the たら clause.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. おかねが あっ__、くるまを かいたいです。 (If I had money, I'd want to buy a car.)

あります → た-form あった + ら = あったら. A straightforward condition: money → car. たり (Lesson 19) lists examples, てから orders sequences.

2. いくら たか__、この カメラを かいます。 (No matter how expensive it is, I'll buy this camera.)

い-adjective + ても: たかい → たかくて + も. いくら〜ても = "no matter how…" — buying happens regardless of price.

3. えきに つい__、でんわを ください。 (When you arrive at the station, please call me.)

たら's second job: "when A completes, then B". つきます → ついた + ら. Unlike と (Lesson 23), たら happily introduces requests like ください.
