What you will learn

You will be able to describe favours in both directions — who did what for whom — using the complete Japanese giving system, which encodes gratitude grammar cannot skip.

  • くれます = gives to me / my side (the missing piece from Lesson 7)
  • 〜てあげます — I do a favour for someone (careful: can sound boastful)
  • 〜てもらいます — I have someone do something for me
  • 〜てくれます — someone kindly does something for me

Grammar (文法)

1. くれます (someone gives to me / my side)

くれます means "give", but specifically toward the speaker / speaker's in-group.

  • 先輩せんぱいは わたしに 本ほんを くれました。 — My senior gave me a book.
  • 祖父そふが わたしに 時計とけいを くれました。 — My grandfather gave me a watch.

Compare: あげます = I/someone give to others ; くれます = others give to me.

2. Giving/receiving actions (〜て あげます / もらいます / くれます)

Attach a giving/receiving verb to the て-form to show a favour (action).

A. 〜て あげます (I do a favour for someone)

  • わたしは 後輩こうはいに 使つかい方かたを 教おしえて あげました。 — I taught my junior how to use it (for them).
  • 友ともだちを 空港くうこうまで 送おくって あげました。 — I took my friend to the airport.

B. 〜て もらいます (I receive a favour / have someone do for me)

  • わたしは 同僚どうりょうに 仕事しごとを 手伝てつだって もらいました。 — I had a colleague help me with work.
  • 店員てんいんに 地図ちずを 書かいて もらいました。 — I had the clerk draw me a map.

C. 〜て くれます (someone does a favour for me)

  • 近所きんじょの 人ひとが 荷物にもつを 運はこんで くれました。 — A neighbour carried my luggage for me.
  • 姉あねが 朝あさごはんを 作つくって くれました。 — My older sister made breakfast for me.

3. Particle summary for favours

VerbGiverReceiver
〜て あげますは (I)に (other)
〜て もらいますに (other)は (I)
〜て くれますが (other)に (me)

Use these to sound natural and express gratitude — bare actions without them can sound cold.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

ともだちは わたしに ケーキを あげました。

ともだちは わたしに ケーキを くれました。

When the receiver is you (or your family), the giver's verb must be くれます. あげます pointing at yourself is the single most famous N5 error — Japanese never "gives up" toward the speaker.

せんせい、かさを かしてあげましょうか。

せんせい、かさを おかしします / かしましょうか。

〜てあげます openly labels your act as a favour — to a superior it sounds condescending. Offer with ましょうか instead, and save てあげる for equals and juniors (or drop it entirely).

わたしは たなかさんに にほんごを おしえてくれました。

たなかさんは わたしに にほんごを おしえてくれました。/ わたしは たなかさんに おしえてもらいました。

くれます' subject is always the giver. If you start the sentence with わたしは, the verb must flip to もらいました ("I received the teaching"). Subject and verb must agree on direction.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. あねが わたしに セーターを __ました。 (My big sister gave me a sweater.)

Giver is subject, receiver is me → くれます. あげました would describe giving away from me; もらいました would need わたしは as subject.

2. わたしは もりさんに とうきょうを あんないして__ました。 (I had Mori show me around Tokyo.)

わたしは + [helper]に + て-form + もらいます = "I received the favour of…". The helper is marked に, and I am the grateful subject.

3. ともだちが ひっこしを てつだって__ました。 (My friend helped me move — kindly.)

Friend is subject and did the favour toward me → てくれました. This verb carries the "thank you" inside the grammar — leaving it out sounds cold.
