What you will learn

You will be able to frame events in time with とき and describe automatic cause-and-effect — buttons, directions, seasons — with と.

  • Noun + の + とき, な-adj + な + とき, い-adj / verb plain + とき
  • Tense inside とき: dictionary form = not yet done; た-form = already done
  • 〜と、〜 — "whenever A happens, B automatically follows"
  • と cannot be followed by requests, invitations or intentions

Grammar (文法)

1. 〜とき (when / at the time of)

States when something happens. The clause before とき uses a plain form, modifying とき like a noun.

Formation

  • Verb (dictionary/た) + とき
  • い-adj + とき ; な-adj + な + とき ; Noun + の + とき
  • 外出がいしゅつする とき、鍵かぎを かけます。 — When I go out, I lock the door.
  • 暇ひまな とき、絵えを 描かきます。 — When I'm free, I draw.
  • 子こどもの とき、よく 山やまで 遊あそびました。 — When I was a child, I often played in the mountains.

Tense before とき matters

  • 旅行りょこうに 行いく とき、カメラを 買かいました。 — Before going on the trip, I bought a camera. (action not yet done)
  • 旅行りょこうに 行いった とき、おみやげを 買かいました。 — When I had gone on the trip (after arriving), I bought souvenirs.

2. 〜と、〜 (whenever / if — natural, automatic result)

States that when A happens, B always/naturally follows (natural law, mechanisms, directions).

Formation: Verb/adj (plain, dictionary or ない) + と、〜

  • この レバーを 引ひくと、水みずが 出でます。 — If/when you pull this lever, water comes out.
  • この 道みちを まっすぐ 行いくと、公園こうえんが あります。 — If you go straight along this road, there's a park.
  • 夜よるに なると、星ほしが きれいに 見みえます。 — When night comes, the stars look beautiful.

Restriction: The clause after と cannot express will, request, invitation, or permission. (✗ 〜と、〜て ください.)
Use only non-past before と.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

こどもとき、よく プールへ いきました。

こどもの とき、よく プールへ いきました。

とき is a noun ("time"), so another noun connects to it with の: こどもの とき = "the time of being a child". な-adjectives take な (ひまな とき).

にほんへ いった とき、かばんを かいます。(intending: buy it on the way, before arriving)

にほんへ いく とき、かばんを かいます。

Inside とき, tense is relative: いく とき = on the way (not yet arrived); いった とき = after arriving. The choice changes where the buying happens — a meaning difference, not a style one.

はるに なると、はなみを しましょう。

はるに なったら、はなみを しましょう。

と states automatic results, so it cannot introduce invitations, requests or decisions. For "when spring comes, let's…", you need たら (Lesson 25). と is for things that happen by themselves.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. ひま__ とき、おんがくを ききます。 (When I'm free, I listen to music.)

ひま is a な-adjective, and before the noun とき it needs its な — exactly like ひまな ひ "a free day".

2. この ボタンを おす__、きっぷが でます。 (Press this button and the ticket comes out.)

A machine's automatic response is the home ground of と: おすと、でます — press it, and it (always) comes out.

3. くにへ かえ__ とき、くうこうで おみやげを かいました。 (I bought souvenirs at the airport when going home — before arriving.)

The buying happened on the way — the return was not yet complete — so dictionary form: かえる とき. かえった とき would place the shopping after arriving home.
