What you will learn

You will be able to build noun phrases like "the photo my father took" — the pattern that unlocks natural reading, where such clauses appear in nearly every sentence.

  • The clause comes BEFORE the noun, in plain form: きのう みた えいが
  • The subject inside a modifying clause takes が (or の), never は
  • The modified noun can then play any role in the outer sentence
  • どんな + noun asks "what kind of…?"

Grammar (文法)

1. Modifying a noun with a clause

A plain-form clause can be placed before a noun to describe it (like a relative clause in English).

Formation: [Plain-form clause] + Noun

  • これは 森もりさんが 焼やいた パンです。 — This is the bread (that) Mr. Mori baked.
  • 昨日きのう 読よんだ 本ほんは おもしろかったです。 — The book I read yesterday was interesting.
  • あそこに 立たって いる 人ひとは 佐藤さとうさんです。 — The person (who is) standing over there is Ms. Sato.

The subject inside the modifying clause is marked with が (not は): 森もりさんが 焼やいた パン.

2. The modified noun can play any role

  • A. Subject: わたしが 撮とった 写真しゃしんは これです。 — The photo I took is this one.
  • B. Object: 森もりさんが 働はたらいて いる 会社かいしゃは 有名ゆうめいです。 — The company Mr. Mori works at is famous.
  • C. With place/time: 姉あねが 生うまれた 町まちは 静しずかです。 — The town my sister was born in is quiet.

3. Modifying clause inside a bigger sentence

  • 〔森もりさんが 住すんで いる〕 アパートは 駅えきの 近ちかくです。
The apartment (that) Mr. Mori lives in is near the station.
  • わたしは 〔祖母そぼが 作つくった〕 料理りょうりが 好すきです。
I like the food (that) my grandmother made.

4. 〜時間 / 約束 / 用事 が あります

  • ゆっくり 休やすむ 時間じかんが ありません。 — I have no time to rest properly.
  • 友ともだちと 会あう 約束やくそくが あります。 — I have an appointment to meet a friend.
  • 今日きょうは 大事だいじな 用事ようじが あります。 — I have an important errand today.

5. どんな + Noun

  • 森もりさんは どんな 人ひとですか。— あかるい 人ひとです。 — What kind of person is Mr. Mori? — A cheerful one.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

これは ちちは とった しゃしんです。

これは ちちが とった しゃしんです。

は cannot live inside a modifying clause — it marks whole-sentence topics only. Inside the clause, the doer takes が: ちちが とった しゃしん = "the photo my father took".

えいがを みました きのう は おもしろかったです。 (English word order)

きのう みた えいがは おもしろかったです。

Japanese puts the whole description first and the noun last — the reverse of English "the movie (that) I watched". And the clause verb must be plain: みた, not みました.

とうきょうに すんでいます ともだち

とうきょうに すんでいる ともだち

Inside a modifying clause, ています becomes plain ている. Politeness never appears mid-sentence — only at the very end.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. きのう __ えいがは おもしろかったです。 (The movie I watched yesterday was interesting.)

Modifying clauses use plain form: みた えいが. The politeness (です) waits until the end of the whole sentence.

2. これは とも__ つくった ケーキです。 (This is a cake my friend made.)

The doer inside the modifying clause takes が: ともだちが つくった ケーキ. は here would break the sentence into two competing topics.

3. __ スポーツが すきですか。 (What kind of sports do you like?)

どんな + noun asks about kind or character. どの asks "which one of these", どれ stands alone without a noun.
