What you will learn

You will be able to state opinions, guesses and reported speech — the step that moves your Japanese from facts to conversation.

  • Plain form + と思います — "I think that…"
  • 〜と言いました (said once) vs 〜と言っていました (relaying a message)
— "…right?" seeking agreement

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

あした あめが ふりますと おもいます。

あした あめが ふると おもいます。

The clause before と思います must be plain form: ふる, not ふります. Politeness lives once, at the end of the sentence (おもいます) — not inside the quoted thought.

Japanese prefers to negate inside the thought: "I think it is not difficult". 〜と思いません exists but sounds like you refuse to hold the opinion at all — put the ない before と.

せんせいは あした テストが あると いいました — when relaying the message to classmates

When you pass someone's words along as information, use Plain と言いました simply reports the act of speaking — natural for narration, odd for relaying messages.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

(I think Tanaka won't come.)

と marks the quoted thought: [plain clause] + と + おもいます. Note the negation sits inside the clause (こない), the preferred pattern.

(The forecast said it will be sunny tomorrow.)

Reported speech, like opinion, always takes plain form inside the quote.

(This restaurant is good, right?)

でしょう? with rising intonation seeks agreement — "…don't you think?". It attaches straight to the plain form: おいしいでしょう?
