What you will learn

You will be able to convert between polite and plain style across all tenses, understand casual conversation, and know which style fits which situation.

  • Plain non-past = dictionary form; plain past = た-form
  • い-adjectives stay as they are; nouns and な-adjectives use だ / じゃない / だった
  • Casual speech drops か (rising intonation instead) and often drops particles
  • Style choice: plain with friends and family, polite with strangers and superiors

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

この カレーは おいしいだ。

この カレーは おいしい。

だ attaches to nouns and な-adjectives only. い-adjectives are already complete in plain style — おいしい, たかかった. おいしいだ is the classic overcorrection.

あした いくか? (casual question with か)

あした いく? (rising intonation)

In casual speech, plain form + か sounds rough or old-fashioned. Questions between friends end on the plain form with rising intonation — the か disappears.

Speaking plain style to your teacher because the lesson taught it

Keep です・ます with teachers, staff and strangers.

Plain form is a relationship register, not a difficulty level. Using it upward feels disrespectful; using polite style with close friends feels distant. The JFT tests this social judgement directly.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. のみます → plain past negative is __。

Chain the rules: ない-form のまない, then conjugate ない like an い-adjective → のまなかった. The ない-form (Lesson 17) does all the heavy lifting.

2. きのうは ひま__。 (casual: "I was free yesterday.")

ひま is a な-adjective, so plain past is だった. かった belongs to い-adjectives (たかかった); でした is polite style.

3. Friend to friend: その えいが、おもしろ__?

Casual question = plain form with rising intonation: おもしろい? No です, no か, no だ after an い-adjective.
