How to Master Kanji by JLPT Level

Kanji study is far more effective when you focus on high-frequency characters in logical batches rather than trying to memorize isolated dictionary entries. NihongoDoya organizes all 3,625 JLPT kanji characters into dedicated level libraries:

  • JLPT N5 (103 kanji): The core building blocks of Japanese literacy — numbers, body parts, directions, and foundational action verbs.
  • JLPT N4 (181 kanji): Everyday life characters for public transit, shopping, social interactions, weather, and scheduling.
  • JLPT N3 (341 kanji): The intermediate bridge into natural Japanese — workplace communication, newspaper headlines, and public notices.
  • JLPT N2 (1,000 kanji): Upper-intermediate literacy required to read Japanese books, business reports, and news commentary smoothly.
  • JLPT N1 (2,000 kanji): Complete advanced literacy covering abstract philosophy, specialized professional vocabulary, idioms, and classical expressions.
