What you will learn

You will be able to say what exists where — the grammar of describing rooms, neighbourhoods and maps — and choose correctly between あります and います.

  • あります = inanimate things; います = people and animals
  • [place]に [thing]が あります — introducing what exists
  • [thing]は [place]に あります — saying where a known thing is
  • Position words (うえ, した, まえ, うしろ, なか, ちかく) + や for open lists

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

こうえんに こどもが あります。

こうえんに こどもが います。

Living, moving things (people, animals) take います; objects and plants take あります. A bus with passengers います? No — the bus itself is a thing: バスが あります.

つくえの うえで ほんが あります。

つくえの うえに ほんが あります。

Existence uses に, not で. で is where an action happens (Lesson 6). "The book exists on the desk" is location-of-existence → に.

Using と when the list is not complete: へやに つくえと いすと … が あります (trailing off)

へやに つくえや いすが あります。

と means the list is exhaustive — exactly those items. や means "things like A and B, among others". Describing a room, you almost always want や.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. あそこに ねこ__ います。 (There is a cat over there.)

Introducing something that exists uses が: [place]に [new thing]が います/あります. は would treat the cat as already-known information.

2. ゆうびんきょくは えきの ちかく__ あります。 (The post office is near the station.)

Location of existence takes に. This is the flipped pattern: [known thing]は [place]に あります — the post office is the topic, its location is the news.

3. きょうしつに せんせいが __。 (The teacher is in the classroom.)

The teacher is a person → います. あります would sound like the teacher is an object — a mistake that always gets a laugh in class, and marks off in the exam.
