What you will learn

By the end of this lesson you can introduce yourself politely, say what you are and are not, ask who someone is, and connect two nouns with の.

  • Build the basic polite sentence NはNです ("A is B")
  • Make it negative with じゃ ありません and turn it into a question with か
  • Say "also / too" with も and show possession with の
  • Use 〜さん correctly (and know when not to)

Grammar (文法)

1. NはNです (A is B)

は is the topic particle (written は, pronounced wa). です ends a polite statement.

  • わたしは サニーです。 — I am Sunny.
  • わたしは 会社員かいしゃいんです。 — I am a company employee.
  • 森もりさんは 日本人にほんじんです。 — Mr. Mori is Japanese.

です shows politeness and present/future. It does not change for person.

2. Nは Nじゃ ありません (negative)

The negative of です is じゃ ありません (casual) / では ありません (formal/written).

  • わたしは 学生がくせいじゃ ありません。 — I am not a student.
  • 林はやしさんは 先生せんせいでは ありません。 — Ms. Hayashi is not a teacher.

3. Nは Nですか (yes/no question)

Add か to the end to make a question. Intonation rises.

  • 森もりさんは 医者いしゃですか。 — Is Mr. Mori a doctor?
    • はい、医者いしゃです。 — Yes, he is.
    • いいえ、医者いしゃじゃ ありません。 — No, he isn't.

No question mark needed in Japanese; か marks the question.

4. NもNです (も = also / too)

も replaces は to mean "also / too".

  • 森もりさんは 会社員かいしゃいんです。サニーさんも 会社員かいしゃいんです。
Mr. Mori is a company employee. Sunny is also a company employee.

5. N1のN2 (の = of / belonging, possession)

の links two nouns; N1 modifies N2 (organization, possession, attribute).

  • 森もりさんは みどり商事しょうじの 社員しゃいんです。 — Mr. Mori is an employee of Midori Trading.
  • これは わたしの 傘かさです。 — This is my umbrella.
  • 日本語にほんごの 先生せんせい — a teacher of Japanese / Japanese teacher

6. 〜さん and age / occupation

  • さん is added to others' names (never your own): 森もりさん.
  • 〜は 何歳なんさいですか / おいくつですか — How old are you?
  • 9歳さいです。/ 25歳さいです。

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

わたしは ラフルさんです。

わたしは ラフルです。

さん is a mark of respect for other people. Attaching it to your own name sounds like you are honouring yourself — one of the most common first-week mistakes.

Starting every question with あなたは…

もりさんは かいしゃいんですか。(use the person's name)

Textbooks show あなた, but in real Japanese it can sound blunt or distant. Once you know someone's name, use name + さん instead — or drop the topic entirely when it is obvious.

わたしは がくせいですじゃありません。

わたしは がくせいじゃ ありません。

じゃ ありません replaces です — you never stack the two. Think of じゃありません as the negative twin of です, not something you add after it.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. わたし__ がくせいです。 (I am a student.)

は marks the topic — the thing the sentence is about. This is the core N5 sentence pattern: [topic]は [description]です. Note it is written は but pronounced "wa".

2. リタさんは いしゃです。ロヒトさん__ いしゃです。 (Rohit is also a doctor.)

も replaces は when the same thing is true for a new topic — "also / too". You do not say もは; も takes the particle's place.

3. これは わたし__ かばんです。 (This is my bag.)

の links two nouns: わたしの かばん = "my bag". The owner or describer comes first, the thing second — the opposite of English "bag of mine".
