What you will learn

You will be able to point at any object and ask or say what it is, choose between alternatives, and answer yes/no naturally with そうです.

  • The three-way distance system: これ (near me), それ (near you), あれ (far from both)
  • この・その・あの — the versions that must be followed by a noun
  • Confirming with そうです / そうじゃありません
  • Asking "A or B?" with 〜か、〜か and omitting nouns with の

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

これ ほんは わたしのです。

この ほんは わたしのです。

これ stands alone ("this one"); この must be glued to a noun ("this book"). If a noun follows, you need この・その・あの — never これ・それ・あれ.

Using それ for something far from both speakers

あれは なんですか。(pointing at a distant sign)

それ means "near you", not just "that". If the thing is far from both of you — a building across the street — it is あれ. Japanese splits English "that" into two words.

これは ペンですか、シャープペンシルですか。— はい、ペンです。

これは ペンですか、シャープペンシルですか。— ペンです。

An "A or B?" question cannot be answered with はい/いいえ — you must pick one. Answering はい to a choice question is a very common beginner slip.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. (Pointing at the bag the listener is holding) __は だれの かばんですか。

The bag is in the listener's territory, so それ. これ would mean it is in your own hands, あれ that it is far from both of you.

2. __ とけいは スイスの とけいです。 (That watch over there is Swiss.)

A noun (とけい) follows, so you need the connecting form あの, not the standalone あれ. "Over there" (far from both) rules out その.

3. この かさは あなたのですか。— はい、わたし__です。 (Yes, it is mine.)

わたしの here means "mine" — の lets you drop the repeated noun (わたしの かさ → わたしの). Japanese avoids repeating the noun the way English uses "mine".
