What you will learn

You will be able to say where you are going, how you travel, who with, and when — the complete "movement sentence" used constantly in daily conversation and the JFT.

  • The three movement verbs: 行きます (go), 来ます (come), 帰ります (return)
  • へ marks the direction — and is pronounced "e", not "he"
  • で marks the means of transport (バスで); walking is あるいて
  • と marks a companion (ともだちと); いつ asks "when" and takes no particle

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

Pronouncing がっこうへ as "gakkou-he"

がっこうへ = "gakkou-e"

Like は→"wa", the particle へ keeps a historical spelling: written へ, always pronounced え. Only these two particles (plus を→"o") behave this way.

あるいてで かえります。

あるいて かえります。

で attaches to vehicles (バスで, でんしゃで). "On foot" is the te-form あるいて and never takes で — memorise it as a set phrase.

ひとりと いきました。(intending "I went alone")

ひとりで いきました。

と needs a companion on the other side (ともだちと = with a friend). "Alone" is the fixed expression ひとりで — で, not と, and another set phrase worth memorising.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. らいしゅう、おおさか__ いきます。 (Next week I'm going to Osaka.)

へ (pronounced え) marks the direction of movement. に also works with movement verbs, but this lesson's pattern — and the safest N5 answer — is destination + へ + 行きます.

2. でんしゃ__ かいしゃへ きました。 (I came to the office by train.)

で marks the means of transport. Direction already has へ; the vehicle always takes で.

3. だれ__ にほんへ きましたか。— かぞくと きました。

The answer かぞくと ("with my family") tells you the question asks "with whom" — だれと. と marks the person you do something together with.
