What you will learn

You will be able to say what you do and where you do it, invite someone politely, and accept or make suggestions — the grammar of making plans.

  • を marks the direct object: パンを たべます
  • で marks where an action happens (different from に for existence)
  • します turns activity nouns into verbs: べんきょうします, テニスをします
  • ませんか invites ("won't you…?"); ましょう suggests ("let's")

Grammar (文法)

1. Particle を (direct object)

Marks the object that receives the action (written を, pronounced o).

  • パンを 食たべます。 — I eat bread.
  • お茶ちゃを 飲のみます。 — I drink tea.
  • メールを 書かきます。 — I write an email.
  • 何なにを 買かいますか。 — What will you buy?

2. Particle で (place of action)

Marks where an action takes place.

  • 公園こうえんで お弁当べんとうを 食たべます。 — I eat a bento in the park.
  • 図書館としょかんで 新聞しんぶんを 読よみます。 — I read the newspaper in the library.
  • 家いえで 映画えいがを 見みます。 — I watch movies at home.

Don't confuse: へ = destination of movement ; で = place where action happens.

  • テニスを します。 — I play tennis.
  • 掃除そうじを します。 — I do the cleaning.
  • 何なにを しますか。 — What will you do?

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

としょかんに べんきょうします。

としょかんで べんきょうします。

Actions happen with で. に is for existence and destination (Lesson 10 and Lesson 5). Test: if the verb is "do"-like (study, eat, play), the place takes で.

Replying いいえ、たべません。 flatly to いっしょに ひるごはんを たべませんか。

すみません、きょうは ちょっと…。

ませんか is an invitation, not a yes/no fact question. A blunt negative sounds like rejection of the person. Japanese declines softly — ちょっと… ("it's a bit…") is the natural refusal.

べんきょうをします and テニスします used interchangeably

べんきょうします / べんきょうを します・テニスを します

Both patterns exist, but be consistent: activity nouns can fuse with します directly or take を — just never double it (×べんきょうをべんきょうします). When the noun already has an object (にほんごを べんきょうします), drop the extra を before します.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. あさごはん__ たべましたか。 (Did you eat breakfast?)

あさごはん is the thing being eaten — the direct object — so it takes を. Like は and へ, this particle has a spelling quirk: written を, pronounced お.

2. えき__ しんぶんを かいました。 (I bought a newspaper at the station.)

Buying is an action, and the place where an action happens takes で. えきに would say something exists at the station; えきへ would mean you are heading there.

3. いっしょに えいがを み__。 (Shall we watch a movie together? — making the suggestion)

ましょう proposes doing something together ("let's"). ませんか would be the softer invitation ("won't you…?"); both are correct socially, but "shall we / let's" is ましょう.
