What you will learn

You will be able to say what tool or language you do something with, describe giving and receiving between people, and say something is already done with もう.

  • に marks the other person: receiver with あげます, giver with もらいます
  • もう + ました = "already done"; the answer to "yet?" is まだです

Mini Practice (練習)

Answers: 1.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

あげます looks outward from the giver — using it for things coming to you sounds wrong (Lesson 24 adds くれます for exactly this). At this stage, when you are the receiver, flip the sentence and use

かきませんでした says you decided not to write it (finished fact). If it simply is not done yet, the natural answer is まだです ("not yet"). This distinction is tested constantly.

A sentence usually carries only one を. The tool takes で ("with chopsticks"); ごはん keeps を as the thing eaten.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

(Japanese people eat with chopsticks.)

で marks the instrument or means — chopsticks, a pen, a language (にほんごで). It is the same で as transport in Lesson 5, one step more general.

(I gave my mother flowers.)

The flowers travel away from you to your mother, so あげます. If you had received them from her, it would be

(Tanaka received a present from a friend.)

With もらいます, に marks the giver (から also works). Learn the pair as one unit: [giver]に もらいます / [receiver]に あげます.
