What you will learn

You will be able to describe things and give opinions: which adjective family a word belongs to, how to put it before a noun, make it negative, and soften or strengthen it.

  • い-adjectives end in い and change themselves (たかい → たかくない)
  • な-adjectives need な before a noun (しずかな まち) and use じゃありません
  • とても strengthens; あまり only works with negatives
  • どうですか asks "how is it?" — the opinion question

Grammar (文法)

1. Two types of adjectives

TypeExampleNote
い-adjectiveおおきい、たかい、おいしいends in い
な-adjectiveきれい、しずか、ゆうめいneeds な before a noun

Exceptions that look like い-adj but are な-adj: きれい(な), ゆうめい(な) are な-adjectives.

2. Adjective as predicate (Nは Adjです)

  • この 山やまは 高たかいです。 — This mountain is high.
  • この 公園こうえんは きれいです。 — This park is pretty.

Negative

  • い-adj: 〜い → 〜く ないです(〜く ありません) : 高たかい → 高たかく ないです

  • この 問題もんだいは 難むずかしく ないです。 — This problem is not difficult.
  • この 道みちは 静しずかじゃ ないです。 — This street is not quiet.

いい (good) is irregular: negative = よく ないです.

3. Adjective + Noun (modifying)

  • い-adj: stays the same → 高たかい 山やま (a high mountain)
  • な-adj: add な → きれいな 花はな (a pretty flower)
  • 森もりさんは 親切しんせつな 人ひとです。 — Mr. Mori is a kind person.
  • これは 新あたらしい 傘かさです。 — This is a new umbrella.

4. とても / あまり (degree adverbs)

  • この パンは とても おいしいです。 — This bread is very tasty.
  • その 映画えいがは あまり おもしろく ないです。 — That movie is not very interesting. (あまり + negative)

5. Nは どうですか (How is N?)

  • 日本にほんの 生活せいかつは どうですか。— 楽たのしいです。 — How is life in Japan? — It's fun.
  • 〜は どんな N ですか — What kind of N is ~? : 奈良ならは どんな 町まちですか。

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

この まちは しずかなです。

この まちは しずかです。

な only appears when the adjective sits directly before a noun (しずかな まち). At the end of a sentence, な-adjectives behave like nouns: しずかです, しずかじゃありません.

あまり おいしいです。

あまり おいしくないです。/ とても おいしいです。

あまり is a negative-polarity word — it must pair with a negative ending ("not very…"). For the positive direction use とても. ぜんぜん (Lesson 9) has the same restriction.

いいです → negative いくないです

いいです → よくないです

いい (good) is the one irregular い-adjective: it conjugates from its older form よい. Negative よくない, past よかった — never いくない or いかった.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. これは __ ほんです。 (This is an interesting book.)

い-adjectives connect to nouns directly: おもしろい ほん. Adding な (×おもしろいな) is the mirror image of the な-adjective mistake — each family has its own rule.

2. あの こうえんは __ こうえんです。 (That park is a quiet park.)

しずか is a な-adjective, so before a noun it needs な: しずかな こうえん. There is no such word as しずかい — a common invented form.

3. この カレーは あまり __。 (This curry is not very spicy.)

あまり demands a negative: からい → からくない(です). The negative of an い-adjective replaces い with くない — じゃありません belongs to the な family.
