What you will learn

You will be able to count objects and people with the right counter word, place the number correctly inside a sentence, and talk about durations.

  • The general counter ひとつ・ふたつ・みっつ… for most objects
  • People: ひとり, ふたり, さんにん…; flat things 〜まい; long things 〜ほん
  • Word order: [thing]を [number] [verb] — the number goes after を
  • Durations: 〜じかん, 〜にち, 〜しゅうかん, 〜かげつ, 〜ねん + どのくらい

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

りんごを みっつを かいました。

りんごを みっつ かいました。

The quantity slots in between を and the verb, with no extra particle: りんごを みっつ かいます. Numbers never take を themselves.

ひとにん、ふたにん… counting people with regular readings

ひとり (1), ふたり (2), さんにん (3)…

The first two people-counters are irregular: ひとり and ふたり. From three (さんにん) onward the regular 〜にん pattern applies. よにん (4 people) is the other trap — never よんにん.

まいにち 7じ ねます。(intending "I sleep 7 hours")

まいにち 7じかん ねます。

7じ is 7 o'clock; 7じかん is 7 hours. One kanji (間) separates a bedtime from a duration — listening tests love this pair.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. みかんを __ ください。 (Three mandarins, please.)

Small roundish objects take the general counter: みっつ. まい is for flat things (paper, shirts), ほん for long thin things (pens, bottles), にん for people.

2. きょうしつに がくせいが __ います。 (There are two students.)

Two people is the irregular ふたり. ににん does not exist, and ふたつ would count the students like objects.

3. まいばん __ にほんごを べんきょうします。 (I study Japanese for one hour every night.)

Duration = じかん. いちじ would mean "at one o'clock", ついたち is the 1st of the month, いちねん is a year.
