What you will learn

You will be able to express desires — for objects and for actions — and say you are going somewhere in order to do something.

  • Nが ほしいです — wanting a thing (ほしい behaves like an い-adjective)
  • V(ます-stem) + たいです — wanting to do (たい also conjugates like い)
  • V(ます-stem)に 行きます — going somewhere to do something
  • 何か (something) and どこか (somewhere) in offers and suggestions

Grammar (文法)

1. Nが ほしいです (want a thing)

Expresses desire for an object. The thing takes が.

Negative

  • 物ものは あまり ほしくないです。 — I don't want many things.

ほしい is an い-adjective: ほしくない / ほしかった.
Used for 1st person (and questions to 2nd person), not 3rd person directly.

2. Vたいです (want to do an action)

Formation: Verb ます-stem + たいです

  • わたしは 沖縄おきなわへ 行いきたいです。 — I want to go to Okinawa.

  • 今日きょうは どこへも 行いきたくないです。 — I don't want to go anywhere today.

The object can be を or が (を more common): 水みずを/が 飲のみたいです.
たい conjugates like an い-adjective: 行いきたくない / 行いきたかった.

3. Vに 行きます/来ます/帰ります (go in order to do)

States the purpose of going/coming. Verb is in ます-stem; the purpose can also be a noun.

Formation

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

あたらしい スマホを ほしいです。

あたらしい スマホが ほしいです。

ほしい is an adjective, so like すき it marks its target with が. (With 〜たい, both が and を are accepted — but ほしい strictly takes が.)

ビールを のみたいました。

ビールが のみたかったです。

〜たい conjugates like an い-adjective: のみたい → のみたかった (past), のみたくない (negative). It never takes ます-endings after the たい.

せんせいに 「なにが ほしいですか」と ききます。

Avoid asking superiors direct desire questions; offer instead: コーヒーは いかがですか。

ほしいですか / 〜たいですか aimed at teachers, bosses or customers sounds intrusive in Japanese. For people above you, offer things rather than asking what they want — a culture point the JFT tests through its conversation section.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. わたしは じかん__ ほしいです。 (I want time!)

ほしい takes が for the wanted thing — the same "adjective takes が" family as すき and じょうず.

2. にほんで すしを たべ__です。 (I want to eat sushi in Japan.)

Actions use the ます-stem + たい: たべます → たべたい. ほしい is only for nouns; you cannot ほしい a verb.

3. デパートへ かばんを かい__ いきます。 (I'm going to the department store to buy a bag.)

Purpose of movement: ます-stem + に + 行きます. かいます → かいに いきます = "go in order to buy".
