What you will learn

You will be able to convert any N5 verb into its て-form — the gateway form for half of Japanese grammar — and use it for requests and "-ing" sentences.

  • て-form rules for group II (drop ます + て) and group III (して, きて)
  • The five group-I sound changes: って, んで, いて, いで, して
  • 〜てください — polite requests and instructions
  • 〜ています — action happening right now; 〜ましょうか — offering help

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

いきます → いいて

いきます → いって

行きます is the single exception to the きます→いて rule: it becomes いって, matching the って group. Every teacher drills this because every student gets it wrong once.

みます → みんで, たべます → たべって

みます → みて, たべます → たべて

The sound changes only apply to group I verbs. Group II verbs (most verbs ending in -eます or single-kana stems like みます, たべます, ねます) simply swap ます for て — no っ, no ん.

Using 〜てください for everything, including to your boss

すみません、もういちど おねがいします。(or 〜ていただけますか as you advance)

〜てください is polite but still an instruction. To superiors or customers it can sound like an order. At N5, softening with すみません…おねがいします is the safe upgrade.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. かきます → て-form is __。

Group I, ends in きます → いて: かきます → かいて. かって would come from かいます/かちます (the って group).

2. すみません、ゆっくり はなし__ ください。 (Please speak slowly.)

Requests are て-form + ください: はなします → はなして ください. This one sentence will rescue you in every fast conversation of your first year.

3. いま あめが ふ__ います。 (It is raining now.)

ふります is group I ending in ります → って: ふって います = "is raining". て-form + います describes what is happening right now.
