What you will learn

You will be able to ask permission politely, understand when something is forbidden, and use 〜ています for states and habits — not just actions in progress.

  • 〜てもいいです(か) — permission: "may I…?" / "you may"
  • 〜てはいけません — prohibition: "you must not"
  • 〜ています for continuing states: すんでいます, けっこんしています
  • 〜ています for habits and occupations: ぎんこうで はたらいています

Softer refusal: ちょっと…。 In answering 〜てもいいですか, "no" → いいえ、いけません / すみません、ちょっと…。

3. 〜て います (state / result, habit, occupation)

Beyond "in progress" (L14), 〜て います shows a continuing state, habit, or job.

A. Occupation / affiliation

  • みどり商事しょうじに 勤つとめて います。 — I'm employed at Midori Trading.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

たなかさんの でんわばんごうを しっていません。

たなかさんの でんわばんごうを しりません。

"I know" is しっています, but "I don't know" is plain しりません — the only common verb where the pair is asymmetric. しっていません is ungrammatical and instantly flags a learner.

わたしは おおさかに すみます。(intending "I live in Osaka")

わたしは おおさかに すんでいます。

Living somewhere is a continuing state, so Japanese uses すんでいます. Plain すみます means you will live there (future). Same with けっこんしています — being married is a state.

Treating ここで たばこを すってはいけません as advice

It is a hard rule — "smoking here is not allowed."

〜てはいけません is not a suggestion; it states a rule or prohibition. On signs it appears as 禁止 (きんし). The JFT loves sign-reading questions built on exactly this pattern.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. ここで しゃしんを とっ__ いいですか。 (May I take photos here?)

Permission asks て-form + も + いいですか. Its opposite — the refusal — swaps も for は: とっては いけません.

2. びょういんで たばこを すっ__ いけません。 (You must not smoke in the hospital.)

Prohibition is て-form + は + いけません. The pair てもいい / てはいけない ("even if you do, fine" / "if you do, it won't go") is worth memorising as a unit.

3. あねは けっこんし__。 (My older sister is married.)

Being married is a state that continues, so けっこんしています. けっこんしました would only report the wedding as a past event.
