What you will learn

You will be able to describe your whole day in one natural sentence, mark that one action must finish before another, and join adjectives smoothly.

  • Vて、Vて、V — actions in the order they happen
  • 〜てから — "after doing A" (stronger sequence than plain て)
  • Adjective linking: やすくて おいしい (い-adj) / しずかで きれい (な-adj)
  • どうやって asks "how / by what route"

Grammar (文法)

1. 〜て、〜て、〜 (connecting actions in sequence)

The て-form links several actions/events in chronological order.

I get up, wash my face, and go to school.
  • 店みせへ 行いって、お土産みやげを 買かいました。 — I went to the shop and bought a souvenir.

The tense of the whole sentence is shown by the final verb only.

2. 〜てから、〜 (after doing A, B)

Emphasizes that B happens after A is completed.

Formation: Verb て-form + から

  • 授業じゅぎょうが 終おわってから、図書館としょかんへ 行いきます。 — After class finishes, I'll go to the library.

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

この レストランは やすいて、おいしいです。

この レストランは やすくて、おいしいです。

い-adjectives link with 〜くて (やすい → やすくて). Only verbs use the plain て-form. な-adjectives and nouns take で: しずかで、きれいです.

Chaining five or six actions with てから: おきてから、シャワーをあびてから、たべてから…

Use plain て for the chain, てから once (or not at all): おきて、シャワーをあびて、あさごはんをたべました。

てから emphasises that A must finish before B — using it for every link sounds mechanical. One sentence usually carries at most one てから.

Mixing time order: がっこうへ いって、おきます。

おきて、がっこうへ いきます。

Actions joined by て must appear in the order they actually happen. Unlike English ("I went to school after getting up"), Japanese cannot reorder them.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. あさ おきて、かおを あら__、あさごはんを たべます。

あらいます (group I, います → って): あらって. The whole sentence is a te-form chain in time order: wake up → wash face → eat.

2. しゅくだいを し__、テレビを みます。 (I watch TV after finishing my homework.)

てから marks "only after A, then B": して + から. It answers the strict-sequence meaning the English "after" carries here.

3. この まちは しずか__、きれいです。 (This town is quiet and beautiful.)

しずか is a な-adjective, and な-adjectives (like nouns) link with で. きれい is also a な-adjective — one of the two famous い-lookalikes (きれい, ゆうめい).
