What you will learn

You will be able to make the plain negative of any N5 verb and use it for "please don't", "must" and "don't have to" — the grammar of rules and duties.

  • ない-form rules: group I shifts the last sound to the あ row + ない (かきます → かかない)
  • 〜ないでください — "please don't…"
  • 〜なければなりません — "must / have to" (despite the double negative look)
  • 〜なくてもいいです — "don't have to"

Common mistakes at this stage

Common beginner errors to watch out for when learning this grammar pattern:

のみます → のみない

のみます → のまない

Group I verbs change the stem's final sound to the あ row: のみ→のま, かき→かか, かい→かわ (買います → 買わない — the う→わ change is the sneaky one). Only group II verbs keep the stem: たべない, みない.

Reading 〜なければなりません as "must not"

It means "must / have to".

It literally says "if you don't do it, it won't do" — a double negative that lands on obligation. The actual "must not" is Lesson 15's 〜てはいけません. Mixing these two reverses your meaning completely.

あした こなくてもいけません。

あした こなくても いいです。 (You don't have to come tomorrow.)

The exemption pattern ends in いいです ("even if you don't, it's fine"). Attaching いけません creates a contradiction — swap the ending, flip the meaning.

Mini quiz — check yourself

Answer before you tap. Every question has a short explanation.

1. ここで しゃしんを とら__で ください。 (Please don't take photos here.)

"Please don't" is ない-form + で + ください: とります → とらない → とらないでください. Group I: り → ら.

2. まいにち くすりを のま__ なりません。 (I must take medicine every day.)

Obligation is ない-form minus い + ければなりません: のまない → のまなければなりません. Long, but it decomposes cleanly once you see the pieces.

3. あしたは やすみですから、はやく おき__いいです。 (You don't have to get up early.)

"Don't have to" = なくてもいいです: おきない → おきなくてもいい. Compare Lesson 15's てもいいです (may do) — same いい, opposite side of the verb.
